Bone Density Center
A Division of Ancillary ServicesBone densitometry is a study done to measure a person’s bone mineral density and can be used to help diagnosis osteoporosis. Bone mineral density is directly related to bone strength. This is a non-invasive procedure where small amounts of radiation are used to determine a patient’s bone density. Measurements are taken of the spine and hips because these are the areas where most osteoporotic fractures occur. Regular bone density testing should be performed on patients who have any of the following risk factors: females, Caucasians, history of fractures, small thin frame, early menopause, or low calcium intake. Medicare will cover bone density testing every two years or less if the patient is on therapy or if the disease is rapidly progressing.
Your physician or licensed staff will give you specific instructions on how to prepare for your exam.
The National Osteoporosis Foundation guidelines indicate bone mineral density (BMD) testing should be performed on:
-All women aged 65 and older regardless of risk factors.
-Younger postmenopausal women with one or more risk factors (other than being white, postmenopausal and female).
- Postmenopausal women who present with fractures (to confirm the diagnosis and determine disease severity).
