The Wound Healing Center at Marion Regional Healthcare System—Offering Patients a New Lease on Life

Marion, SC--For Ted Dimmery, the prognosis wasn’t good. The Marion native, whose chronic wound wasn’t responding to treatment, was facing the amputation of his leg.

For four years, Ted had been in and out of physicians’ offices throughout the Pee Dee.  His expenses were mounting. He was unable to work, and his quality of life was less than desirable. At what should have been the prime of his life, Ted was sidelined. The once active sportsman and motorcyclist was literally watching life pass him by.

All of that changed when a Florence area physician told Ted about the Wound Healing Center at Marion Regional Healthcare System.

With a glimmer of hope, Ted decided to give it a try. “I had nothing to lose and everything to gain,” he said.  “What was one more appointment compared to losing my leg?”  That appointment proved to be the turning point for Ted.  “Without Marion Regional Healthcare System’s Wound Healing Center, I would have lost my leg and with it, my every hope of living a normal and active life,” Dimmery continued.

Through the help of Eric Young, MD, and case manager, Yvonne Hill, RN, BSN, Ted underwent 10 months of extensive treatment including sessions in the Center’s hyperbaric oxygen chamber, a skin graft, and intensive physical therapy.

“Ted is a classic example of a patient who can benefit from the services of the Wound Healing Center,” said Program Director, Sue Rudnicki.

The Center, under the Medical Direction of Dr. P. G. Krishnan, has been a welcome addition to the Pee Dee since it opened its doors nearly a year ago.

Specializing in the treatment of chronic wounds and non-responsive conditions, it offers hospital-based outpatient wound care and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Now, through the help of the Wound Healing Center at Marion Regional Healthcare System, patients like Ted have a new lease on life.
