Marion Regional Healthcare System’s Wound Healing Center Marks First Anniversary
Marion, SC--The Wound Healing Center at Marion Regional Healthcare System is celebrating its first anniversary.
The Center, under the Medical Direction of Dr. P. G. Krishnan and Program Director, Sue Rudnicki, has been a welcome addition to the Pee Dee since it opened its doors in September of 2008.
Specializing in the treatment of chronic wounds and non-responsive conditions, it offers hospital-based outpatient wound care and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
According to national statistics, the number of chronic wound cases is steadily growing, rising by 15 percent annually as an aging population develops more chronic diseases associated with non-healing wounds. The Pee Dee and Grand Strand are no exception to this condition.
“Chronic wounds can exact a toll on patients far beyond the pain and discomfort of the wound. They can cause patients to lose their mobility, which may lead to a decline in general health and emotional well-being. Patients often become disabled, unable to work and dependant on care from their families,” said Dr. Krishnan.Chronic wounds, sometimes caused by trauma in accidents and falls, are often associated with underlying conditions such as diabetes, clogging of the arteries and diseases of the veins.
Since its inception, the Wound Healing Center at Marion Regional Healthcare System has been lauded for its compassionate, interdisciplinary and expert care. “We have been able to successfully treat individuals who thought amputation was their only answer,” said Rudnicki.
As a division of Marion Regional Healthcare System, the Wound Healing Center participates in specialized wound care studies and assures that its physicians and nurses have access to the latest in clinical research and practice.
“It’s a team effort and a well organized program,” said Don Lloyd, Chief Operating Officer of Marion Regional Healthcare System. “It’s exactly what our communities needed.”
