Marion County Medical Center Announces Winners in Art Contest
05/24/2007
Marion, SC--Marion County Medical Center has announced the winners of its student art contest. Held in conjunction with National Hospital Week, budding young artists from throughout the area submitted posters portraying their vision of “What Marion County Medical Center Means to Me.”

“The students are very artistic. It is easy to see that quite a bit of research went into the project.  Many different departments and medical specialties were depicted,” said Elista Smith, Vice President of Public Relations.

“Nearly 100 students entered the contest,” she continued. “Posters were displayed during Hospital Week and will become the basis of a 2008 Student Art Calendar, a first for the Hospital.  All of the art was excellent.  It was extremely difficult to pick entries for the calendar, much less our top three winners.  Truly, all of our students and their teachers are winners,” concluded Smith.

Winners, all of whom are from District 7, included: 1st Place: Mary Holly (Rains Centenary Elementary School:  Geneva Morris, art teacher), 2nd Place: Cheyennne Thompkins (Rains Centenary Elementary School: Geneva Morris, art teacher) and 3rd Place Chris Reed (Creek Bridge High School:  Diane Bucci, art teacher).

Art submitted by Hunter Lane, a student at Marion Intermediate School will adorn the calendar’s cover.  In addition to these winners, other art selected for the calendar included that by Anyija Nichols, Cesar Castro, Cameron Rich, Michael Hughes, Alicia Williamson, Lisa Tyler, Jamya Scott, Jessica Holder, Ashley Hankins, and Jenna James.

Winners were treated to cookies and juice in the School’s cafeteria where they were presented certificates and ribbons and recognized by Hospital officials. Also in attendance were parents, teachers, and Mr. Dean Everette, Superintendent of District 7.

Easterling Primary received a special presentation as the school with the most entries. A total of 83 students from that school entered the contest, five of which were chosen for the calendar.  Elista Smith, Vice President of Public Relations along with Kimberly Woodberry, her Administrative Assistant,  made that presentation to the students and Principal, Angie Grice.

Judges for this year’s contest included:  Molly Bethea-Floyd, Erika Roberts, and Pam Vyge.

“We’re very proud of each of these students,” said Gene Tucker, President and CEO.  In addition, we are most pleased to work so closely with the School Sytem.”
