01/31/2007
Marion, SC- Becky Bartolec, RD, of Marion County Medical Center has been selected by the South Carolina Dietetic Association (SCDA) as one of five Registered Dieticians to serve as a Media/PR Representative for South Carolina.  Bartolec will represent the Pee Dee District serving Chesterfield, Marlboro, Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Marion, Horry, Williamsburg and Georgetown counties.

Media/PR Representatives for the SCDA work to reach the general public in order to represent Registered Dieticians in South Carolina and to provide educational programs for the public. The Pee Dee Dietetic Association (PDDA) has several programs already in place including Walk to Wellness, Kids-Win, Lose-a-Ton, and monthly lectures in nutrition for residents, Dietetic Internships and Women's Health.

Bartolec was also selected as one of 25 Registered Dieticians in South Carolina in 2006 to receive media/communications training hosted by the South Carolina Dietetic Association and the American Dietetic Association.  This event provided training by Kathleen Zelman, MPH, RD past ADA Spokesperson and current nutrition correspondent for CNN and Web MD nutrition writer.   Attendees were trained on creating healthy messages for consumers and the most effective ways to communicate these messages to the public.

“Since joining Marion County Medical Center, Becky has been instrumental in developing healthy eating programs for both our hospital cafeteria and the community, including establishing partnerships with local grocers to identify healthy items,” said Elista Smith, VP of Public Relations of Marion County Medical Center.  “This additional training and new position with the SCDA will help to spread her work on a much larger scale.”
