Bone Densitometry
Bone densitometry is a study done to measure a person’s bone mineral density, used to help diagnose osteoporosis. Bone mineral density is directly related to bone strength. This is a non-invasive procedure where small amounts of radiation are used to determine a patient’s bone density. Measurements are taken of the spine and hips because these are the areas where most osteoporotic fractures occur. The National Osteoporosis Foundation guidelines indicate bone mineral density (BMD) testing should be performed on:
- All women aged 65 and older regardless of risk factors.
- Younger postmenopausal women with one or more risk factors (other than being white, postmenopausal and female).
- Postmenopausal women who present with fractures (to confirm the diagnosis and determine disease severity).
Your physician or licensed staff will give you specific instructions on how to prepare for your exam.
